Glaston was invited to the factory of a local customer to assess the increasing demand of nitrogen required on-site. Nitrogen is an essential part of the customer’s food packaging production.
The customer had used the existing on-site nitrogen generators for many years and despite using a number of different suppliers, the customer could not get the purity at the required flow rate.
During the assessment Glaston used a thermal mass flowmeter data logging system to log the site demand and to determine the nitrogen consumption.
A number of options were put forward and it was determined that a 99.5% nitrogen purity and a flow rate of 80 m3/hr was required to meet demand.
The main criteria for the system design was to generate nitrogen at the minimum possible cost. Therefore Glaston recommended an energy efficient, highly reliable HPC Kaeser compressor.
As the customer had limited floor space, a bespoke purpose built container was proposed. This would provide an effective solution to house the nitrogen generator, air compressor and ancillary equipment.
Once built, the containerised package was inspected and tested by both Glaston and the customer before delivery for final approval.
The container was then lifted into position and a purpose built set of stairs were installed to provide access to the nitrogen generator. The container also has an automated ducting system to ensure it remains above +5°C and below +35°C.
The system was commissioned ahead of schedule and has been in operation since December 2013. The production facility was not affected during the installation and the customer now has a reliable, economic solution that effectively meets the nitrogen demand.
