Crown Packaging – Cost Effective Compressors

Last year one of our long standing clients, Crown Packaging, requested that we visit one of their operations in Carlisle to review the existing compressors.

As part of the review process a data logging survey was undertaken; the kW usage was analysed, showing the compressors to be using slightly less kW than expected. A calibrated thermal mass flow meter was then used to determine the physical output or air deliverance of each compressor. Surprisingly, the findings showed that two out of the three compressors were 20% below the expected rate of specific power given on the original manufacturer’s technical data. In essence, the MPG of the compressors was very poor.

On the basis that the compressors were under-performing, Glaston recommended a smaller compressor that would reduce the upfront capital costs and long term maintenance costs. The annual savings by running modern HPC screw compressors with the latest technology SAM controller would reduce the electrical running costs by 20%.

Other important issues rectified by using the latest screw technology from HPC included a reduction in noise pollution and improved compressor reliability; with all of the equipment being offered with a 5 year warranty. The compressor installation, including extensive duct work, took place over a weekend just 5 weeks after the order was placed.

Chris Smith, the Environmental Health and Safety, and Site Services Manager commented – “Glaston Compressor Services provided a professional service from start to finish. The attention to detail from the first site visit to the data logging and performance analysis of the original installation was second to none. We had no hesitations in changing over to using Glaston following the positive feedback from the other factories in the group. I am extremely pleased with the new installation.”
